Welcome to Scripture Studies

Scripture Studies for "thoughtfull Christians"

"People interested in history and people interested in religion ought to combine forces more than they do. A theologian's interpretations remain liable to contradiction unless he knows something of the historical background."

"Nobody ever outgrows scripture;the Book widens and deepens with your years"

Clergy Library at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland

Dear Gentle Readers,
Welcome to the new and improved Scriptural studies site.

Please take a few minutes to acquaint yourself with the changes that have been made and are being made as we grow. In order fully participate you will have to join the site with your own private password and then join the groups that you are interested. We will be combining some groups and deleting others.

Also you may want to note that at our library reading site there are other  study groups that you'll  want to check out http://scripturalstudies.webs.com. (Scripture Institute Library) If you can't find it here I haven't written it yet!. Another location is the On-Line University still under construction Look for "Doc Notes" for the advanced scholars http://seminar-studies.spruz.com

There are some groups and studies that you may not recognize but are or will be important to your walk with Him.

Christianity 101- This group page is primarly being used to teach through the Bible. The Bible is such an endless book and there are so many ways to study. One may study the books of the Bible spiritually, historically, typically, topically, prophetically, dispensationally, analytically, biographically, critically, devotionally to name just a few. The method I am to use is what I would call interpretative. That is to say we shall study the books of the Bible interpretatively. We shall seek to get hold of the controlling thought, the outstanding meaning and message of each book, and then see it in relation to the other books of Scripture. Each book contains within it a " KEY" that will provide the significance of what is written.

Pauline studies

Pauline studies is a sub-discipline within the larger framework of New Testament studies, which itself is in an even greater realm of the discipline of Biblical Studies (encompassing both the O.T. and N.T.). It involves many studies such as: The Pauline theology, What letters did Paul really write? What was Paul's theology Jewish or Christian ? Was there a center to his theology? What is the background to his letters and thought? What was his knowledge of Jesus?

For Thinking Christians A new group dedicated to the principle of study/thought similar to the Rabbinic talmudThe Talmud  "instruction, learning", from a  oot "teach, study") is a central text of mainstream Judaism, in the form of a record of rabbinic discussions pertaining to Jewish law, ethics, philosophy, customs and history.

The Talmud has two components: the Mishnah  (c. 200 CE), the first written compendium of Judaism's Oral Law; and theGemara (c. 500 CE), a discussion of the Mishnah and related Tannaitic writings that often ventures onto other subjects and expounds broadly on the Tanakh.

The terms Talmud and Gemara are often used interchangeably. The Gemara is the basis for all codes of rabbinic law and is much quoted in other rabbinic literature . The whole Talmud is also traditionally referred to as Shas , a Hebrew abbreviation of shisha sedarim, the "six orders" of the Mishnah.

What Each Area of the Site is Meant For: Blogs - This is your personal space. This is where you should post thoughts that are not intended for extensive further discussion. Observations from personal study and events that have occurred in your life belong here. Unless your post ends with questions or makes it apparent that discussion is to follow, it should probably be a blog. As discussed later, blogs are limited to those who hold to historic Christian beliefs. Forums - This is for open discussion relating to the topic posted. Dialogue is encouraged to stay on topic, so if a side conversation begins, open a new discussion. This is where the majority of the activity has taken place so far. Topics should remain general in nature, while in depth discussion on narrow topics should take place in groups. Groups - This is a place to congregate with people who have similar interests and positions in order to have open discussion. The conversation in here is not required to remain on topic, so it is more ready to follow rabbit trails. This is where you should go if you want to gather with a particular kind of theologian. Before initiating a new group, we ask that you consider posting a question in the discussion forum area to see if there is enough interest to justify a separate group. The reason we encourage such action is that, in the event that a group is inactive for 6 months or more, the moderators of Scriptural Studies reserve the right to close down and delete the group due to inactivity. Events - This is available to anyone that wants to post an event that you think the members of Scriptural Studies may be interested in. Contact Denis, Rabbi Del, Rifkah, or Marti for more details on advertising. Our Attitude of conduct: In case you missed them on your way in, take some time to become acquainted with the conduct we expect on this site. You may find our Attidudes on the main forum page. Our purpose at Scripural Studies is that the conversations move in a Gracious way. We define Gracious in the following way: 1) Not closed minded 2) Not self-promoting 3) Not characterized by mass amounts of cut-and-paste proof-texting 4) Not characterized by mass amounts of cut-and-paste from other places 5) Irenic 6) Not slanderous 7) No spamming 8) Perpetual venting bitterness 9) Not confusing or disruptive But in all things you'll be welcome here
